Captain Hisyam Haron, a Master Mariner in our Singapore team, has a maritime career that spans over a decade, during which he gained broad experience sailing on multi-purpose vessels and bulk carriers. His extensive experience encompasses handling a wide range of cargo, including breakbulk, project cargo, bulk, and grain. This diverse background has equipped him with the expertise to handle complex maritime operations with precision and care and understand the intricate nature of vessel incidents and how to respond to them.
Reflecting on his career to date as a native Singaporean, Captain Hisyam said, “Being born and raised in Singapore, one of the world’s leading maritime hubs, I’ve always felt a strong connection to the maritime industry here. After graduating from the Singapore Maritime Academy in 2010 and completing my National Service in 2012, I embarked on a decade-long seafaring career. That time at sea, navigating different vessel types and managing a wide range of cargoes, was instrumental in shaping my career and developing my expertise.”
He spent most of his career with Pacific Carriers Limited, working his way from 4th Officer to Chief Officer and then a stint as an Assistant Marine Superintendent ashore, before heading back to sea to serve as Master.
During his tenure, Captain Hisyam was entrusted with the ultimate responsibility and authority for the safety of his vessel, crew, and the marine environment. His command experience is supported by his proficiency in modern navigation systems, particularly the Electronic Chart Display and ECDIS. “Safety and operational excellence have always been at the core of my work,” he explained. “It’s vital to ensure that all operations are conducted in strict compliance with maritime regulations.”
In February 2022, Captain Hisyam transitioned to shore-based operations, taking on the role of Marine Superintendent at Pacific Carriers Limited to manage a fleet of MPVs and bulk carriers. The change to a permanent shore-based role was a significant career step for Captain Hisyam but one that was made easier through the connections he had made with the wider team. “Moving ashore was a significant change,” he recalled. “But because I transitioned within the same company, it was smoother. I was familiar with the system, the people, and the structure, which made it easier to adapt to my new role.”
As Deputy Designated Person Ashore (DPA) and Company Security Officer (CSO), Captain Hisyam played a crucial role in overseeing the safe and efficient operation of the fleet. His experience in preparing vessels for PSC inspections, coupled with his expertise in conducting internal audits, made him a key figure in ensuring rigorous safety practices are implemented and regulatory requirements are adhered to across the fleet.
Since joining Brookes Bell in March 2024, Captain Hisyam has quickly established himself as a vital contributor to our consultancy services in Singapore and the wider Asia region. His knowledge of complex ship management tasks and compliance standards, alongside his detailed approach to investigation and root causes analysis, means he can provide effective support to clients navigating the complexities of the maritime industry, particularly across the dry sector.
For example, specialising in ship inspections, cargo claims, and expert witness work, his experience as a Stowage Advisor at G2 Ocean in 2023 provided him a deeper understanding of safe and efficient cargo operations, ensuring all elements of cargo planning such as lifting, stowage and securing are well prepared.
His experience across multiple sectors, including seafaring, ship management, cargo planning and operations has allowed him to bring a wide-range perspective to the challenges faced by Brookes Bell’s clients and enable him to provide suitable guidance and support especially for vessel incidents.
His appointment comes as we continue to expand our credentials in Asia by welcoming exciting and dynamic local talent that can professionally support vessels in the region. “It’s an exciting opportunity to join Brookes Bell as a Master Mariner in Singapore, not just for the Organisation, but also for my career. The role allows me to apply my experience in a much broader context to help service all manner of vessels, cargo and crew issues, and offer critical support that can help reduce incidents in the future.”
“In addition, the team here in Singapore continues to grow,” he observed. “We’ve recently brought on an engineer with expertise in LNG vessels, which adds a different dynamic to our team. It’s exciting to be part of this growth and to work with such a diverse group of professionals.”
Captain Hisyam noted that one area he has enjoyed so far is working closely with our engineering and scientific experts. “Working with our cargo scientists and metallurgists has been a fantastic experience,” he said. “Their expertise, especially on cargo issues like rusting of metals, adds a whole new dimension to the cases I handle. Having access to these experts across our global network makes it easy to collaborate closely and learn from their disciplines.”
“The scope of work at Brookes Bell is incredibly broad,” he remarked. “It’s not just about cargo; I’m also dealing with crew issues, navigation challenges, and even fire incidents. It’s always different day-to-day, and I’m always learning something new.”
Beyond his operational roles, Captain Hisyam is deeply committed to contributing to the local maritime scene. In 2017, he took on the role of Adjunct Lecturer at the Singapore Maritime Academy, Singapore Polytechnic, where he taught the Diploma in Nautical Studies course and the Chief Mate Special Limit programme. “Imparting my knowledge and experience is something I’m passionate about,” he said. “It’s rewarding to help prepare the next generation of maritime professionals for the challenges they’ll face in the industry.”
He is also actively engaged in the local maritime community. As an Associate Fellow of The Nautical Institute and a General Council Member of the Singapore Maritime Officers Union, Captain Hisyam contributes his expertise and insights to the industry.

Whether at sea, in the office, or in the classroom, Captain Hisyam embodies the qualities of a true maritime professional: knowledge, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to safety and operational excellence.
