We’re pleased to introduce Marcelo Rodrigues, a Senior Scientist in our Liverpool office. With a deep specialisation in cargo-related investigations and extensive experience as an expert witness, Marcelo is a valuable member of our team, offering scientific insights that play a critical role in supporting our clients.

Marcelo brings more than 17 years of scientific expertise to Brookes Bell, particularly in cargo-related incidents. His career includes extensive research and consultancy in the handling, transportation, and preservation of various types of cargo, ranging from perishable goods to more complex hazardous materials. Marcelo’s background in applied sciences, and years of practical experience enable him to address a wide array of cargo issues, including contamination, decay, and degradation during transit.

He holds a degree in Biological Sciences, supplemented by advanced studies and continuous professional development in areas such as microbiology, biofouling, and cargo handling techniques. His academic background provides him with a robust foundation for addressing the scientific and technical challenges associated with cargo consultancy. Marcelo also achieved a PhD from the University of Vigo, this advanced qualification has equipped him with in-depth research skills and a comprehensive understanding of complex biological and environmental processes, which he applies to his work in cargo consultancy and expert witness services.

Reflecting on his shift to consultancy, Marcelo shares, “I initially pursued an academic career and was immersed in research, especially on topics like marine biofouling and cargo preservation. Moving into consultancy wasn’t planned, but it turned out to be a fantastic match. Brookes Bell has allowed me to apply my scientific skills in real-world scenarios where my knowledge can genuinely help clients.”

His scientific acumen is complemented by his thorough understanding of maritime regulations and best practices surrounding cargo handling and storage. This makes him particularly effective in identifying causes of cargo damage, advising on preventative measures, and offering technical guidance that ensures compliance with international shipping standards. Marcelo adds, “What I find exciting is the diversity of cases.
