Yangzijiang Shipbuilding to Invest $142m in Shipyard Expansion Project

China’s Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has announced its intention to significantly expand its facilities with a $142 million investment. The expansion will focus on boosting Yangzijiang’s clean energy vessel manufacturing capabilities.

The shipbuilder is planning to acquire 866,671 square metres of land in Xinqiao Park of the Jingjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone in JingJiang City to set up a base focused on LNG and other clean-energy vessel fabrication projects.

The project will see shipyard capacity bolstered across 1,320 metres of shoreline on the Yangtze river, with the new base being co-located next to Yangzijiang’s existing Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding facility.

Industry analysts have suggested that the investment follows a boom in newbuild orders for Yangzijiang. May of this year saw Yangzijiang toting a record order book with a value of $16.1bn. 193 vessels comprise this order book.

Yangzijiang has also confirmed that as of late May, it has reached 74% of its annual target for new orders, with 38 vessels with a combined value of $3.3 billion.

The shipbuilder has also confirmed that of its new orders, 54% are for green vessels including methanol, dual-fuel, LPG carriers, and VLECs.

In a statement to the Singapore Stock Exchange (where Yangzijiang is listed), the company said that it is, ‘currently conducting a feasibility study on the project and will provide further updates via the release of announcements upon finalisation of the project plan’.
