International cargo shipping company ZIM has announced that it has made an order for 1,000 Star Cool reefers that are to be fitted with Sekstant door sensors. The company has also ordered a similar volume of sensors for its existing fleet of Star Cool reefer containers.
The investment forms part of ZIM’s ongoing collaboration with Maersk Container Industry (MCI) - as both Star Cool and Sekstant are part of MCI.
The investment sees ZIM committing to MCI’s complete reefer package, including Star Cool Integrated and the Sekstant gateway for ‘reefer connectivity’. On completion of the investment, Star Cool containers will make up approximately one-third of ZIM’s total reefer fleet.
The Sekstant door sensor is a wireless door opening surveillance system that has been co-developed by ZIM. The sensor provides information to ZIM’s digital fleet management system, such as when the door of a reefer has been opened and closed. These ‘events’ are registered in the Sekstant cloud and are visible in the Sekstant interface.
In short, the Sekstant system allows for real-time reefer information, monitoring, reporting, and seamless fleet management from anywhere in the world.
What’s even more appealing to shipping lines like ZIM is the fact that the Sekstant door sensors will remain in operation - and capture door opening and closing events - even when the reefer is powered off.
Commenting on the investment, Gil Lehmann, Head of Global Logistics and Equipment at ZIM, said:
“We are committed to providing the highest level of service and reliability to our customers, and our investment in the Sekstant gateways and door sensors for our Star Cool reefers is just one example of that commitment.
With the Sekstant solution, we can better track and monitor our reefer fleet, and provide our customers with real-time information about their cargo, ensuring the safe and timely delivery of their products”.
ZIM’s investment in their reefer container fleet forms part of their aim to deliver their own commercial reefer tracking product - ZIMonitor.
