Paint and Coatings Forensic Analysis

In addition to our survey reports and expert witness work, Brookes Bell can provide detailed forensic analysis of paint and coatings through our independent laboratory and technology facility, The Lab at Brookes Bell.

When you need to get to the root cause of a problem, paint flake samples can be measured and examined using The Lab’s scanning electron microscope, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography mass spectrometry equipment.

This can include documenting the profile of the top and bottom surfaces of the sample to identify contamination, blister fluid composition, inclusions and the presence of rust or scale.

By analysing a cross-section of the flake we can provide detailed information, such as

  • The degree of surface preparation used prior to the application of paint
  • The number of coats
  • The colour and the individual coating thickness
  • The presence of voids, vacuoles and penetration of rust staining

The state-of-the-art laboratory enables us to independently inspect, test and analyse your paint and coating samples and The Lab’s quick and efficient methodology saves you valuable resources on costly and time-consuming methods where plating or panels need to be removed before inspection can take place.
